Artist Insight - Daniel Yates

Artist Insight with Daniel Yates

We sat down with Daniel Yates (@Unsighted) to ask him some question about his background with photography, what gear he uses, favorite shoot locations and much more.

 Which camera do you use?

Canon 5D Mark 2

Do you prefer to use a tripod, or freehand?

I've always preferred freehand in daytime because tripods can be a hassle but at night definitely tripod.

What are some of your favorite locations to shoot?

I'm a nature oriented person so any time I get to shoot in a National Park, I'm blown away.

What time of day do your prefer to shoot, night or day?

I'm a sunrise/sunset kind of guy, but when the sun goes down and the tripod comes out, I feel like there's so much more creative possibility.

What brought you into photography?

Exploring. Sophomore year of high school I hopped on my bike and I would be out for hours taking photos with my old iPod touch. After I discovered the Instagram community, I was inspired to go out and buy a DSLR.

How long do you spend editing a photo?

It depends on the photo and what it's for. Sometimes a preset is all it takes. Sometimes it's a 20 minute edit. If I'm editing a shot for a clothing brand or a portrait session, I'll go into much more detail.

Which program(s) do you use for editing?

I stick to Lightroom mainly. I've messed around in Photoshop for the learning experience as well.

Do you have any advice for someone getting into photography?

Don't be afraid to fail. If you don't learn to fail, you'll fail to learn

What type of images do you think your presets are best suited for?

My presets are mostly city oriented, but I do include a preset called Faded Green that I use for a lot of my nature shots

Do you have any tips or tricks for users of your presets?

Don't be scared by the initial look. Mess around with the white balance and coloring to make the preset fit your photo best.

Your best tip for post-processing an image

Try editing your photos a couple times. You might like one edit over another.

What inspired you to get involved in the AOV community?

People rarely succeed without community. AOV provides a great opportunity to stay connected with photography whether it's your hobby or your passion.

A little bit about yourself

I'm a 17 year old high school senior. I picked up a camera a year and a half ago, and currently freelance in Austin, Texas. Recently I started working with brands to help promote their products by offering them photos at an affordable, set price. My next goal is to shoot for the likes of Nike, Adidas, and Land Rover
