Artist Insight - Patrick Monatsberger
Artist Insight with Patrick Monatsberger
We sat down with Patrick Monatsberger (@moners_) to ask him some question about his background with photography, what gear he uses, favorite shoot locations and much more.
Which camera do you use?
I recently switched from Canon APS-C to a Sony Alpha full-frame mirrorless camera
Do you prefer to use a tripod, or freehand?
I definitely prefer to shoot freehand because I love to travel with very light luggage. However in some situations (such as astrophotography) a tripod is absolutely essential that is why I always bring a ultra light travel tripod with me.
What are some of your favorite locations to shoot?
I love to shoot in any alpine locations. Also I think forests and lakes are nice locations to shot in.
What time of day do your prefer to shoot, night or day?
It´s definitely day time. Early mornings or sunsets to be more exact. That is when the light situation can be very interesting. Sometimes it is also fun to shoot at night though.
What brought you into photography?
Since I can remember I loved taking pictures. When I was a little kid I used to shoot with my grandpa´s polaroid camera which was fun and later as a teenager it was a good thing to have a digital camera in almost every mobile. Only 3-4 years ago I decided to go one step further and bought my first DSLR camera ever.
How long do you spend editing a photo?
It is actually not that long. I would say 10-15 mins per photo.
Which program(s) do you use for editing?
It is Adobe Lightroom on my Macbook and 1-2 apps on my iPhone (Snapseed and VSCO cam)
Do you have any advice for someone getting into photography?
Do what you want to do, and don’t pay care to what others say! Also, one of the most stupid delusions I have heard is that people need the best and most expensive camera equipment in order to take good pictures. YOU DON’T HAVE TO! I’ll tell you what: you can do a pretty good job with almost every customary smartphone. Never let a lack of gear limit your creativity!
What type of images do you think your presets are best suited for?
Not sure if there is a special kind of image my presets are best suited for. It is more the colors and tones in the original picture that harmonize or disharmonize with presets.
Do you have any tips or tricks for users of your presets?
One very important point is that not every preset has to look perfect on every image it is used with! Don´t be frustrated or upset if it doesn´t give your image the look you have expected. As said under point 9 colors and tones in the original photo are very important to do the trick. YES presets can give a nice look to an image but in the end it is just a preset and you ALWAYS have to do some more tweaks to make it THE PERFECT PHOTO.
Your best tip for post-processing an image
It is really hard to give any tips when it comes to this topic. I can only speak of me but it took me around 2-3 years to find the picture look I like and workflow I am happy with. Also as every viewer has their own taste it simply doesn´t make sense to tell someone do this and that. Just try to find your own way and style. I know its not so easy sometimes but in the end it will pay off!
What inspired you to get involved in the AOV community?
I think AOV is a very great platform and community when it comes to photography and visualization where likeminded people can get a lot of inspiration and talk about what they love taking photos!
